Controllers Comments.

For this West Midland League Event, Dorothy planned courses which made good use of the area and avoided the rough open with current felling of mature trees to create more heathland in the south east of the area (visited only by blue and brown courses). It is always a challenge at Birches Valley to site the start nearby and the finish back in the car park area and at the same time to provide interesting shorter courses within the recommended distances and finishing times. Thank you for the favourable comments received.
In addition to planning the courses Dorothy installed and used OCAD for the first time as part of club policy to help planners to use the system. She also programmed all the boxes. As controller I was very impressed and I am now learning to use OCAD. This reduced time for planning and revising and made it easier to produce overprinted maps for all courses. Apologies if it was not made clear that maps were not bagged as well.
Thankyou to all the many club members who gave their time to help with the event and to Phil Green as organiser.

Planners Comments

Planning this event, only my second, made me appreciate how many hours of time are concentrated into that 50 or so minutes for which the competitor turns up to run. This is particularly so when unlike me, many planners have work and family commitments to fulfil as well. The area produced a few surprises with the felling of juvenile trees for Christmas and at the tagging stage, felling of more mature trees on an open bracken area obliterating a control site. The biggest challenge to me was, as a recent convert to the computer world, using OCAD in the planning of courses, and programming the SI stations. The convenience of electronic punching makes a lot of last-minute labour necessary since the “boxes” have to be put out as late as possible. I am very grateful to willing conscripts.

I hope you were pleased you came to Cannock Chase particularly anyone trying orienteering for the first time. We were fortunate with the weather considering the variety we’ve had in the last two weeks.
