The first of the 2005 handicap relay league saw some close racing in the fading sunshine, with 7 teams finishing within 5 minutes. Catherine Bushnell (partnered by Mum, Claire) was just pipped at the post by 2 seconds in a sprint finish with Dave Allen who has only been orienteering a few months after starting in school with Peter Christopher. Well done to Dave and his partner, Roger Birch, who took home the prize mugs.

A blustery day turned into a pleasant evening as another 15 teams went into competition at the second round at Brocton Coppice. It was great to see some new faces, particularly Ian, who tried orienteering for the first time and left with as much enthusiasm as he arrived with (he finished in 3rd place with team mate, OD member and GB international Graham Gristwood)! Round 1 winner Roger Birch just can’t stop taking home the mugs. This time partnered by Chris Boycott, the two veterans cleared up their points quickly to take a relatively easy victory from Gareth Little and Jonathan Howell in second place.

Hot, hot, hot…describes both the weather and the racing, with the first 3 last leg runners starting within seconds of each other. First back was Chasers Chair Andy Yeates, partnered by his Vice Ray Collins who took home a pair of mugs between them. Their victory keeps them on the heels of league leaders Claire and Catherine Bushnell, who finished third today, sandwiching Mike Barnby and Heather Butterfield in second place.

A small but select group battled it out post Scottish 6 Day and a week later than originally advertised. None of the leading teams were able to make it as the lure of holidays proved stronger than the lure of Brindley Heath! The winners were Beth Clayton and Ian Turner, ahead of Gareth Little and Stodge (on a bike), and Rob Little and Alan Hartley. We have yet to have a team of 21’s take home the prize mugs, and all is to play for if the top teams turn ouot for the last days competition.

The finale of the season saw the battle for the title. It was close at the start of the race, but as dusk drew in, route choice involving the ability to read the map in the gloom played a part. Winners on the night were Clare and Emily Garside, who took home their prize mugs, and overall winners are confirmed as Claire and Catherine Bushnell, who finished in second place tonight. In second place overall are Mike Barnby and Heather Butterfield, who leapfrogged Andy Yeates and Ray Collins (victims of the gloom), who ended the series in third place overall.

Thank you to everyone who has turned up and enjoyed themselves, and a bigger thank you to everyone who has helped to collect controls in after the event. See you in 2006 for the next 5 events!

Cath,
