N/C teams because of reduced handicap on the night

The first round of this years handicap relay league saw a large turnout in fine weather. 15 teams went into battle on the Satnall Hills, and although the younger juniors were lightening around their course, there was some close competition with sprint finishes down the hill. Congratulations (and prize mugs) went to Andrew Collins and Mark Robinson, who were clear winners on their favourite area. They were followed home by the father-son combination of Oli and Jonathan Howell, last years runners up.

Round 2 on Brocton Coppice saw the Bushnell juniors take control of the league. They finished well ahead of a record number of teams, and take overall lead at this early stage. The bracken slowed a lot of people down, so well done to Andy and Ray, who finished second overall as the leading seniors, and move up the table to second overall, too.

Round 3 on Ansons Bank and Oldacre sees joint leaders at the top of the league. Close racing gave Carol and Sarah Dredge, defending champions, the win, just ahead of Mark Robinson and Andrew Collins, with Oli and Jonathan Howell finishing third. The scoring puts Mark and Andrew equal on points with Oli and Jonathan (last years overall runners-up). Unfortunately vandalism to 2 control sites will have affected todays times/scores. None-the-less, Andy and Ray are keeping the pressure on the leaders with consistently high scores.

Round 4 was run in clear blue skies following a day of rain. School holidays caused both a reduced turnout, and a change at the top of the leader board. Jonathan Howell, without Oli, paired up with Roger Birch to take the prize mugs home, while old-timers Chris Boycott and Jim Knight take their turn at the top of the leader-board. Can they keep it up? The next round is the decider!

Another glorious evening on the Chase saw the fifth and final round, and the closest racing. A sprint finish from opposite directions saw Emily Garside just pip Adam Bushnell to the line, with Amy Thompson just 10 seconds behind. This weeks prize mugs went to Emily and dad, Mark, making them the fifth winning team of the series. Good running from Andrew Collins and Mark Robinson sees them take the overall series (they will receive their prize at the club party), just ahead of Chris Boycott and Jim Knight.

A big thank you to all the teams who have taken part this year – the number of people out every month makes the effort of putting it on worthwhile, and thanks, too, to everyone who has collected controls in for me. See you in 2005 for the third annual Summer Handicap Relay League!

Cath.
