CONTROLLER'S, PLANNERS' AND ENTRIES COMMENTS
The event was organised and planned by Walton Chasers Orienteering Club with some 30 volunteer helpers.
We hope you all enjoyed your half day outing to Cannock Chase and the competition. For the majority of pupils who were competent, responsible, and appropriately dressed it was a pleasure to be able to put on the event.
Please try and have your entries in early next time – emails are acceptable.Apologies to those whose post went AWOL.
The courses were planned to White, Yellow and Orange British Orienteering Fedeation standard.
In order to achieve these standards all pupils are expected to be competent in certain basic skills – to orientate the map, orientate their body round the map, and recognise major features on the map including vegetation changes and colours (yellow = open ground, white = wooded area.) They must know that the control codes on their map must match the codes on the controls they punch on their cards. Our 'Helpers' should not have to teach the competitors how to read a map – this event is a sporting competition.There were a number of competitors who set off not knowing these basics.
They should also know that they MUST NOT move or tamper with the controls – a small minority did.
We hope that this event provided a useful next step up for the development or orienteering in your school. COMPETITION DAY ORGANISER'S COMMENTS
Thank you all for coming – and bringing such lovely weather with you again this year! Several teachers came and thanked us for the event – which helps make it all worthwhile.
We managed to put most of the results up on the strings this year , and will try and have the presentation before you go back to school next time.
A very big thank you to all teachers for bringing your pupils, to the competitors for taking part, to the willing band of helpers who did such stirling work, and to the Cannock Chase Rangers for their help and support.
Congratulations to all competitors and the Winning Schools.
