Return to Walton Chasers Home PageWhen I first visited the area in September the bracken was green, six feet high and very wet. I was horrified at the thought of the event even taking place. Fortunately the bracken turned brown and died down enough to make it possible to run through it in most places.
Mark's courses got the lengths about right, with some good route choice legs and all the controls in the right places. The only controls which seem to have caused any difficulties were 116, where a more definitive control description (Gully, west end rather than just Gully) should have been used; and 151 & 174, both of which were on spurs where the bracken was still high and visibility less than ideal.
The organisation of the event just seemed to happen with no apparent problems, so thanks to Chris and his team for being so efficient.
On the days the sun shone the views across the Chase were superb. I look forward to competing at the next event staged there.

Planner’s Comments
This was my first event using both Picover and a new OCAD map. Despite being very careful to fully update all changes when using Picover, we were still caught out by an error in the OCAD map file, which didn’t print the 2 copses in white. This error wasn’t spotted in advance because on my computer screen the copses appeared white, the error only becoming visible when the map was printed !!
The difficulty in planning for a November Event on Cannock Chase is inevitably the bracken. As Barry has commented the prospect in July (when I started taping) and September was very depressing. But the autumn frosts enabled competitors to run through most of it. With hindsight I should have reduced the lengths further to compensate, but since the courses had to be finalised in mid October, the decision is a rather subjective one.
The only course I have concerns with is M14A, where the gold badge time was excessively long. From comments I have heard since, this course regularly gives problems, and in future I will look to combine it with a shorter course.
The bracken prevented me using Brocton coppice as much as I would have liked, and many controls were moved to spurs and other locations where the banner would not be obscured. I think most of you enjoyed the variation and route choice from comments I received, although the ‘German Cutting’ was another difficulty especially for the shorter courses.
Thanks to Barry for his helpful comments and patience with our Picover problems, and those Chasers who assisted with map bagging and bringing in the controls afterwards. Thanks also to Doug Peel for his Picover tutorials.
Finally my apologies to the lady who received a map without numbered controls on Course 14.

This event was my first badge event as organiser and the fact that it was relatively trouble free was partly due to the copy of Walton Chasers Badge Event Organiser's Guide that I carried round with me at all times towards the end. The other reason for the success of the event was the hard work of the various teams who got on with things and gave me an easy day. My thanks go to Rod Niven, George Baker, Norman Hall, Graham Reynolds, Jeff Smith and all their helpers, Graham Sturgess and Andrew Waters for moving the caravan, and David and Pat Schofield for processing the entries.
Inevitably there are some problems. In hindsight, I should have put up a sign about carrying whistles. Some of you were sent back from the start which was disappointing, however with the threat of mining fissures on Cannock Chase, it is a sensible precaution to carry a whistle. I mentioned this in the final details but obviously the message did not get round to everyone.
A local complained during the day that we would leave Milford Common covered with litter. I am happy to say that, as always, you proved him wrong. Thank you all for coming.
