Walton Chasers Regional Event Beaudesert Sun 17th February 2008 |
Badge Times Available here..... Routegadget available here. Planner Comments As planners, we would like to say a special thank you to Mike Forrest, our controller, for stepping in at very short notice with such good support and advice. Also, a big thank you to all the club members who volunteered to help with putting out and collecting in controls - Allan Williams, Mark Garside, Chris Boycott, Jon Howell, Beth Clayton, Ian Turner, Sue Lynch, Ian and Judith Hughes. All the support was much appreciated. Perhaps it is a good thing we soon forget how much time planning an event takes. We look forward to seeing you at our future events. Organisers Comments
The road through Cannock Wood collapsing the week before the event, after everything that had gone before became humorous rather than calamitous. Maybe the iron age fort at Beaudeserts Castle Ring carries a curse I thought as my car suffered a blow out on the way home on Sunday Hopefully most competitors were blissfully unaware of the problems in the run up to the event. I may be called finicky by some, I prefer to call it attention to detail. With a week to go, might, may, could, have no place in an Organisers mind who needs positive responses to ensure that the day goes according to plan. As it was, I could not have asked for a better day, bitter cold (-7deg at 6:30 at the camp) with glorious winter sunshine in what I hope you’ll agree was a super setting. The camp staff came up trumps and provided us with a huge car parking team to efficiently get everybody in and parked. Thanks too to the camp manager, Nigel, for thawing out the water pipes for me so I could fill the drinks containers. Mike did a sterling effort with the results and setting up the IT side of things whilst Rod, Tom and their teams in Registration and Start respectively simply came and got on with their tasks quietly and effectively giving me little to worry about. Possibly due to the linear nature of the camp the atmosphere seemed strangely subdued and peaceful considering we had over 500 competitors. It may have been you all simply basking in the sunshine or possibly exhausted after tackling Jane and Dorothys courses. Final thanks go to everybody who turned up for making all the hard work worthwhile, to Mike Forest for Controlling and especially to my good wife, Helen for bagging over 500 maps and to my family for all their help, support and understanding behind the scenes. Mike Thompson Controller’s comments
Generally, comments about your courses overheard near the finish were favourable (helped in part by the fine weather). I think Jane and Dorothy did a good job in providing you with a good variety of orienteering challenge in an excellent area. However, with the benefit of hindsight, I don’t think we would have used control 167, which some of you suggested was a bit of a “bingo” control. Apologies to those of you who felt frustrated in your attempts to find it. Otherwise, a good day for everyone. Mike Forrest Lost Property
What a lovely day to be out on Beaudesert and see the area at its best. It was a challenging area to plan on and it seems it has been improving over the last few years. We hope you agreed.
If it could have gone wrong, it did. Wrong entry closing dates sent by the club to BOF which ultimately led to their being published in Compassport. Maps printed incorrectly. Junior control descriptions on the website produced as pictorial rather than written. Equipment spread far and wide. Running out of map bags with 4 courses still to bag. Competitors disappearing off the start list when we uploaded the information onto the website and conflicting opinions by senior club members on what should and should not be done to put on a Regional event.
