FINAL DETAILS

Travel

Parking and all facilities are all provided at the Forestry Visitor Centre at Birches Valley, Rugeley. There will be orienteering signs only from the traffic light junction with the A51 and Hagley Road in Rugeley. The visitor centre is however signed from many directions with normal brown road signs. If driving on the minor roads over Cannock Chase at night please be careful of deer on the road Click for approach map. The assembly point is marked as ‘Forest Centre & Deer Museum’.

Parking

The Visitor Centre has plenty of hard standing car parking space. Do not use the ‘Pay & Display’ machines but there will be a £1.00 charge collected on arrival.

Dogs

In car park and assembly area only, on leads please. There are deer in the woods.

Facilities in Assembly Area

Enquiries and SI hire will be in one of the Visitor Centre Buildings. Toilets, Ultrasport, Wilfs Catering and First Aid will be adjacent.

Registration and Enquiries

Open from 18.00. The event is pre-entry only and entry on the day will only be possible if there are spare printed maps available. We are intending to print close to the event so it is unlikely that there will be many available. Start lists and control descriptions will be available. SI Hire £1.00 per card. If you have pre-entered and pre-paid take your SI slip to the hire point, otherwise please have £1.00 available. All hired SI cards must be returned after competing, lost cards will be charged at £15.00.

Seeding

Seeding applies in courses 1 and 2 for UK Cup runners and this may have resulted in you not getting your preferred start time. We apologise for this but given the short duration of starts hope that it has not caused too much of a problem.

SPORTident

The competition is using SportIdent electronic punching. Clear stations will be positioned in the pre-start area. It is the responsibility of the competitor to ensure that each SI control unit is activated by the dibber causing a bleep and flashing light.

Start

There is only one start. The distance to the start is less that 500m, allow 6-7 minutes walk. It will be a ‘punching’ start but you will be called up and passed through at minus 2. Please be ready.

Finish

Is in the Visitor Centre area and only a short distance from parking and enquiries. Please ensure that you ‘punch’ at the Finish and then proceed to the DOWNLOAD point which will be inside one of the buildings.

Terrain

Typical Forest Enterprise working forest. There are some good areas of mature runnable pine forest and also blocks of less mature trees and recent clear-fell. There are some brambles in places. The lakes and ponds in the forest are deep with muddy bottoms and are not crossable. There has been some recent thinning in places that have created extraction lanes. These are not mapped and are no faster than the adjoining forest.

Map

1:10,000 map, A4+ size surveyed Autumn 2002. All courses are pre-printed and in sealed bags.

Control Descriptions

Pictorial descriptions are provided for all courses. These will be included in the map unit and will also be available on the night and can be collected from Enquiries.

Out of Bounds

There are some houses on the edge of the forest and at one point inside the forest area. Please stay away if possible and the garden fences MUST NOT be crossed.

Roads

There are no road crossings on any course but there are roads along the edges of the map. The tarmac surfaces are Out of Bounds and if you wish to follow a road you must stay on the grass verge. The courses do not make the roads a sensible route choice.

Safety

All competitors should carry whistles and must download even if they retire. Every effort will be made to account for all competitors but if you are travelling alone and wish us to check your safe return please leave your name and car keys in a sealed envelope at Enquiries. Please note that this service is provided at your risk and we cannot be responsible for the keys.

The other two prizes will be drawn from all finishers who were not eligible for the main prize.
