WCH MapRunF Summer Series 2 – Lichfield

The 2nd in Chasers 2020 MapRun series is now live.   This time, there are 3 courses on offer in central Lichfield.  There are 2 linear courses which are especially suitable for beginners – a very short course wholly within Beacon Park, and a short course that includes some road crossings.  There is also a 60 minute score event around the streets of Lichfield.  Run any of the courses whenever suits you – there is nothing out there to mark the controls so it really is a virtual course.  Simply print the course you’d like to run, download the MapRunF app (Google Play or AppStore), and follow the instructions in the attached sheet.  If you don’t want to use the app, you can just print the map out and run the course.

WCH MapRunF Summer Series 1 – we’re back!

As we make small steps back to orienteering, we are now launching our MapRunF series.  MapRunF is a smartphone app that allows you to run an orienteering course at a time of your choosing.  There is nothing out there to mark the controls so it really is a virtual course.  Simply print the course you’d like to run, download the app (Google Play or AppStore), and follow the instructions in the attached sheet. Each course will be available for 2 weeks for you to run when convenient to you.  If you don’t want to use the app, you can just print the map out and run the course.
Summer Series Event 1 is on Shoal Hill, near Cannock. Available now until 12th July.
NB: We’ve geo-referenced the map as best we can – just be aware that MapRun uses GPS signal to identify control sites – so is prone to the vagaries of the GPS and your phone!!

WCH Orienteering and COVID-19

Following the British Orienteering statement yesterday, we are sad to say that all orienteering activities, including training events and coaching is now suspended.  We hope to get back out in the forest as soon as we can but will follow the official advice.  See below for the BOF statement:

Suspension of all orienteering activities
It is with great sadness that we are now in a position where all orienteering activities in the UK have to be suspended with immediate effect.
We are aware that the Coronavirus outbreak is a very fluid and rapidly changing situation. We will, therefore, continue to follow advice from Public Health England, World Health Organisation and both local and national governments on this matter and will keep the orienteering family updated as appropriate.
We know how great the sport is at supporting each other and we ask that you continue to pull together (albeit virtually) during this difficult time. We will do our best to get you back in the forests as soon as it is safe to do so.
UPDATE 5th June – as the lockdown eases, and in accordance to BOF guidance, we are now looking at options to start individual runs as step 1 in our return.  As soon as this is setup, we’ll post details here and on our Facebook page.

Chasers club coaching day #1

Over 20 Chasers took part in today’s coaching session held on Brereton Spurs, which was the first of a series of 5 over the spring and summer months.  Led by Mike B, we focused on simplification techniques, and then finished the morning with a clock relay.  A really great morning, with thanks to everyone that helped out during the day.  The next in the series is on 21st April on Shoal Hill – all club members welcome.

Compass Sport Trophy round cancelled

Tomorrow’s qualifying round of the Compass Sport Trophy has had to be cancelled as the Forestry Commission have withdrawn permission to hold the event.  As a new date has not been able to be found, all teams will progress to the final.  This year, that is on our doorstep in Sutton Park on 18th October.  Hold the date – your club needs you!

WCH Dinner 2020

Huge thanks to Dan and Diane Findlay-Robinson for organising the annual club dinner which this year was held at the Chase Golf Club.  Our speaker was Ian Kevan, who talked of his years running Ultrasport, his passion for getting injured servicemen back to sports, and the work he’s still doing assisting O-shoe companies develop their products – who knew there was so much to it?!  The annual senior prizegiving was also incorporated and the evening was finished off with a O-flagged fairy cake for everyone, baked by Di!

Club coaching sessions

A new series of technical coaching for club members starts on 11th Feb, with the first session covering compass work.  It will be led by Vicky, and will run from 18:30 to 19:30 and will valuable for all abilities.  Meet outside the swimming pool entrance at Walton High School, and bring your compass!  Details of the rest of the series will follow soon.

Mid-week orienteering on Hednesford Camp 22nd Jan

BAOC (British Army Orienteering Club) are organising a race on Hednesford Camp on Wednesday 22nd January.  This will form part of the Military League Central which is open to civilians too.  Please see the flyer for more information: MLC-Hednesford Camp 20200122.  As this is the first in the league for a while, Vicky (who’s organising) would like to get an idea of how many to expect so that there are enough maps.  If you plan to go, please contact Vicky (see contact details here).
